The word jewellery itself is derived from the word jewel, which was anglicized from the old French “jouel”, and beyond that, to the Latin word “jocale”, meaning plaything. Jewellery design is the art or profession of creating, crafting, fabricating or rendering designs for Jewellery. This is an ancient practice of the goldsmith or metalworker that evolved to a billion-dollar industry with the odyssey from ancient cultures into the machine age.

One of the first to start jewellery making were the peoples of the Indus Valley Civilization. By as early as 1500 BC, the people of the Indus Valley were creating gold earrings and necklaces, bead necklaces, and metallic bangles. Jewellery also found great status with India”s royalty. In fact it was so powerful, that certain laws were established by some rulers which limited wearing of certain jewellery types only to royalty. India was also the first country to mine diamonds, with some mines dating back to 296 BC. The journey of the jewellery industry over the centuries has indeed been an incredible one”

According to a 2007 KPMG study, the largest jewellery market is the United States with a market share of 30.8%. Japan, India, China, and the Middle East each have 8-9%, and Italy with 5%. The authors of the study predict a dramatic change in the market shares by 2015, where USA’s market share will drop to 25% and China and India’s will increase to 13%.
